First-Time Flower Bed? Here’s How to Make It Flourish
Planting a flower bed for the first time can be a lot of work. For it needs total love and care for optimal bloom color and fragrance, as well as minimal weeds!
If you are planning to start your own garden, there are some critical factors to consider. An important thing to know is the “hardiness zone” of where your garden is. Knowing this gives you a starting point of how much heat, humidity, rainfall, you will get, and (most importantly) the soil conditions. The best way I recommend to check the soil condition, is with a pH level test kit. This will tell you the levels of important nutrients your plants need. Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium are some essential nutrients for healthy growth.
The best time to test your soil for pH levels, nutrients, drainage and acidity in the Spring. At this time of the year, you should be weeding and turning over the soil before you begin planting as well.
Another important Spring time task, is refreshing or replacing your “edging” (the border around your beautiful garden). You can use bricks, stones, or wood for this. I find having your flower bed an inch lower than your lawn looks great.
We hope these tips help you in your garden journey.
